Winery of the Month

TE MOTU
"Te Motu" derives from the original Maori name for Waiheke, Te Motu Arai Roa, meaning "Island of Long Shelter." The story of Te Motu Vineyard began in 1988 when the Dunleavy family acquired 30 acres of vineyard valley, transforming it into a renowned haven for premier wine production. Situated in the heart of Waiheke Island's Onetangi Valley, the vineyard benefits from a sheltered location, protected by natural features such as a ridge and rocky outcrop. Its soil, comprised of Jurassic-age Waipapa Group formations and a unique microclimate, provides an ideal environment for growing Cabernet and Merlot grape varieties. Te Motu's philosophy revolves around achieving balance in all aspects of vineyard and winery practices. Emphasizing minimal intervention, the focus is on using high-quality fruit harvested at optimal ripeness to craft wines that reflect the terroir of Onetangi Valley. Hand-harvested berries from low-yielding vines are carefully processed and aged in barrels sourced from top French coopers.  Te Motu wines embody the unique characteristics of the vineyard site and promise longevity. Visitors can experience the essence of Te Motu at "The Shed," a restaurant offering a relaxed, modern-rustic ambience amidst the vineyards. The cellar door provides an opportunity to sample aged red wines while enjoying the picturesque surroundings of the Onetangi Valley.
