Poggio Anima Asmodeus Nero d’Avola IGP. Wow, what a mouthful. And so’s the wine! Just wait until you wrap your laughing gear around these modern looking but traditional style Italian reds from Poggio Anima.
This is their Nero d’Avola from Sicily and, to keep it simple stupid, they’ve colour coded their labels. This one’s purple and on the label it features some kind of angry dog with wings and a serpent tongue. Apparently that’s Asmodeus, who in ancient Hebrew is known as the “Lemon of Dust”. Oh, wait, sorry that ancient Hebrew was a bit dusty, it’s actually “Demon of Lust”.
Asmodeus is the offspring of Adam (y’know, from Adam and Eve) when he slept with a demon prostitute. Apparently Nero d’Avola is just as lustful and pleasurable with its spicy, peppery characters. Right, ok, in our books one is definitely more naughty than the other!
But we’ll give them one thing, this is a damn good example of the most important varieties grown on the island of Sicliy. A medium bodied, bright and juicy red with loads of dark berry fruit flavours and a savoury almost licorice like finish! A second glass? Oh, go on then!
